Nixon's "smoking gun" tapes are lost...

Suppose the taping of President Nixon telling Haldeman to direct the FBI away from Watergate by using the CIA as a cover, the so called "Smoking gun tape" is lost...

Would Nixon still be found liable and forced to resign...or would he somehow be saved?

Well my hunch is Nixon's men - Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell and Colson still get convicted but Nixon issues a big national apology and gets to serve out his term.

Gerry Ford wins a close vote in '76...

Anyway I can't see how Nixon can be forced to resign without solid evidence and the smoking gun tape was the only evidence to show he was directly involved....
