Nelson Mandela serves two terms

Nelson Mandela retired South African President in 1999, and was succeeded by Thabo Mbeki. He did not have to stand down, as he could have served another term (the SA constitution bars Presidents from serving more than two terms). What if he had not stood down? Would the failed policies which were first implemented under his watch (Aids, BEE and affirmative action, land reform) be blamed on him, or would his "Saint Nelson" persona have stayed intact?

Would SA still be cosying up to Zimbabwe, Myanmar and other odious regimes, or would it have continued to follow Mandela's "moral foreign policy" which he envisaged in in 1994?

Would Mbeki still have succeeded him in 2004, and would he be making a colossal mess of the country as he is now?

Discuss.
