Different transliterations

I often wonder what happens if English translates how a word SOUNDS rather than how its spelling in another language makes it appear that it is supposed to sound.

For example, what if Vodka was called BARTKA in English

Or the animal was a SHAGWAR

A bit like Welsh, you mean, where you can play snwcr (snooker), or Ukrainian, where you might go and get a herkut (haircut)?

Not sure what you're getting at here. "Vodka" is a pretty reasonable transliteration of водка. Certainly a lot better than "bartka".
