ATD/AHC: Development and widespread use of nuclear vehicles

From the bombing of Hiroshima throughout the 50's there was considerable interesting in the development of various nuclear powered vehicles. Ranging from trains, plains and even cars with even Ford building a concept car called the Ford Nucleon, that was planned to use a portable nuclear reactor. Along with both the United States and Soviet Union looking into nuclear aircraft and trains. Not to mention the possible applications of Nuclear thermal rockets in the exploration of space. Even today there are plans for a thorium powered car. Though sadly issues with effective shielding and portability prevented this frok becoming a reality.

So what alternate technological divergences and advancements would be required for the development of practical nuclear vehicles to not only be developed but also become widespread by the end of the 20th Century?

Well, to start, they have to not build the entire industry around Uranium which was a decision made due to the development of nuclear weapons even if its rare and relatively hazardous.

miniaturization and shielding will be next step although I don't see cars ever going nuclear no matter what as its simply too hazardous for what it is. I can see larger airliners maybe putting it in service provided there are no accidents with the particular type of reactor it is using whatsoever. The second one has an accident they'll be phased out though.

Agreed that nuclear powered cars would be to dangerous to ever be introduced into the civilian market. Though if an effective form of nuclear powered aircraft could be developed. If it would lead to various militaries considering the development of nuclear powered tanks.
