AHC: The American Civil War 1961-1965

Said in the title. The POD should actually be in the XIXth century, between 1838 and 1860: OTL's War between the States is avoided, by whatever political means necessary, including, possibly, continued toleration of slavery in the Southern states for some time (or, most simply, good ol' Abe Lincoln's early demise/renunciation to politics, though it probably wouldn't be enough).
The international scenery may or may not change accordingly: the rest of the world may or may not have different outcomes. US politics and society at large will surely be a bit different from about 1850 onwards.
It's by no means obligatory that the war be a simple repetition, one century later, of a North-south struggle. it could be East-West, or multilfaceted conflict between multiple factions. Neither is it necessary to postulate the total victory of one side at the end and the continued unity of the USA, only that the conflict detonate around spring, 1961, end generally die down four years later, one way or another left to those of will be willing to accept this challenge and work on this idea. Preferably as a team effort.
I have neither the deep knowledge nor the time or capability to elaborate much beyond these basic foundations, but I'd like some of the finer writers/thinkers here to tinker with this and come out with something both original and entertaining.
