1066: The year of the Comet

Some my say this belongs in the ASB forum, but I think that it is within reason to believe that in the chaotic nature of the universe, that Haley's Comet could have had its orbit shifted just slightly so that it impacted the Earth in the year 1066.

What would be the effects? I assume it's not big enough to cause a mass die off.

Not even close to a die off. Halley's Comet, despite it's popularity, is a small and loosely held together comet. It would breack up on entry and be an unusually large meteor shower with some large (compared to a stick of dynamite, for example) impacts at various locations around the globe. Shoemaker-Levy 9, on the other hand, would be a perfect comet for a comet impact with significant consequence - though it would still be more comparable with the 560s than with 65,000,000 BP.
