  1. Hitler's Gamble by Brendan Simms

No need to read more than the sample when its central premise is flawed, it overstates the isolationist strength and minimises the link drawn between Germany and Japan. The US was as I stated all but fighting a war in the Atlantic, it would fighting alongside the British et al in the Pacific. At...
  2. Hitler's Gamble by Brendan Simms

Book is total bunkum, the US and Germany were already at the stage of an undeclared war in the North Atlantic with US ships escorting convoys nearly to Ireland and attacking U-boats on sight without warning. Neutrality was being stretched to the limit with some war related items being declared...
  3. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Not mechanised and pretty static is to put it mildly post Barbarossa. Might be a lot of Germans but precious few of the Heer, at first, are good for more than garrison troops. This is due to the majority of the good ones having moved to Finland to fight the Soviets and so would need to redeploy...
  4. Malaya What If

Yup, never sent to the Med so never in a position to be sunk. Can also be assumed they had a bit more TLC than OTL so in a little better shape hence Rover being available instead of the Dockyard.
  5. Could The Roman Empire have conquered all of the British isles, had it chosen to try?

And why was there no fleet? Because the threat was not seen as large enough. It the Irish raids are big enough to bother, then the Roman counter is an Irish Shore. Not to mention lots of punitive actions till the Irish get the message ( the meme of the Roman idea of defence being to attack is an...
  6. Could The Roman Empire have conquered all of the British isles, had it chosen to try?

Uniform as in without Hadrian's wall acting as a barrier, all of Britain becomes Romano-Celtic not just the areas South of it. Obviously an organised Roman defence ( which included ships, not just land forces ) is a lot tougher than individual tribes, just as happened OTL in the South.
  7. USSR gets absolute victory in the Winter War, effects on WW2.

No, Stalin hated to gamble, OTL he underestimated the Finns, he would not underestimate the Germans. Despite what a lot of books imply the Germans actually had the numbers when Barbarossa started ( a lot of figures given look to be for all the Soviets strength not just the Western Districts vs...
  8. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

True, the only benefit of a land campaign past Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica was to give Stalin a Second Front. Once the Med is open, finishing off Italy is just a political decision, militarily it was actually a greater draw on Axis resources to let it be.
  9. Could The Roman Empire have conquered all of the British isles, had it chosen to try?

Err, what Scots? Do you mean the Irish raiders ( at this point in time )? A Roman Britain that is the entire island will have a more uniform culture and identity. The Irish raids would be less successful and the entire colonisation of the far North might be avoided.
  10. Best case scenario for native Americans in the US

You also need the natives not to rock the boat and do things that either destroy confederations or upset neighbouring settlers. People keep bringing up the Comanche but forget they were genocidal slavers.
  11. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Not allow ships through the blockade? Sweden was among other things dependant on both food and oil imports, without the Allies approval of those imports ( all ships to Sweden were searched for contraband at designated stations ), its very screwed.
  12. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Only part of the year, Swedish ore in winter is blocked by the ice on the Baltic. The main change is that with France and Belgium in German hands they have more sources of iron.
  13. What if the German Empire had no colonies -> Better performance in WWI?

Nothing meaningful changes at all, if GB still joins as per OTL. Any additional troops ( which would not be many for reasons others have given ) would just cause France and Russia to increase their armies, Indeed since there is no HSF to defend the coast, more end up guarding the coast. We can...
  14. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

As Northern Norway is only connected to the Swedish rail network, the supply line issues for an Allied landing go both ways. If the Allies get a strong lodgement then the Germans kicking them out is not easy. So ending up with a German Southern Norway and an Allied North with both sides not...
  15. Triple Calamity: What if the Three Most Important Men in the Executive Branch Died in One Night?

No , the area in question ( what is now the High Plains ) was referred to as a desert at the time ( Sahara is Arabic for desert ) as that meant at the time anywhere uninhabited and treeless, the modern definition adds arid. So what are now classed as steppe and grasslands were in the 19th...
  16. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

That's a lot of specialised kit and engineers being handwaved into existence. Even the Soviets did not get the fields back to more than 20% after 2 years, and they had far easier access to personnel and equipment than the Germans would have.
  17. What if the americans didn't open up Japan, then in the late 1880s, A european empire tried to conquer it.

Read the setup, this would be a Japan with no modern kit at all let alone a Navy.
  18. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

The first two are right, the third is a laugh. There is/was an oilfield at Romny, which is located around 200km East of Kiev. So far nearer to German logistics than the Caucasus. The Germans held it for around two years but despite that never got it back into anything like full production...
  19. WI: The IRA assassinateQueen Elizabeth II?

This comes in the same class as what happened after 9/11. The rules change and its a lot harder to be a terrorist. The US is likely to have cut Noraid off at the knees and any attempt to get support from Libya or the PLO would just end up backfiring.
  20. Sir John Valentine Carden Survives. Part 2.

Given the Soviets were practicing scorched earth and had everything wired up ready, getting a working refinery is pretty much ASB. The fields they did overrun OTL were basically in a state that put them months minimum away from being able to produce meaningful amounts of crude let alone products.
