That wasn’t exactly a pleasant read, but it was a superb piece of writing. Beneath the icky bits this is essentially a character study of a man fundamentally disillusioned with his job and his wider function in society, a type of profound existential ennui that is very much recognisable today...
I fear my knowledge is fairly superficial, but I’d imagine remaining neutral in the Great War would be massively advantageous, if it were politically possible. Even better, do a deal with the allies: debt forgiveness and reduction of the concessions in return for benevolent neutrality.

As others have said, the pace would suffer if the TL was like this all the time. But there’s something about narrative from a character’s perspective, with their inner life exposed, that liberates a writer’s style, as “history book” doesn’t allow expression to flow as freely...
Given your extraordinary speed of updating, without the slightest lapse in quality, none of us have any grounds to complain. There’s certainly no need to apologise:)
